FLEUR’s Words

HER STORY by founder FLEUR HUIJSkENS

As part of our love for countries and cultures, we love languages and words. They take us on a journey and offer a deeper meaning and ancestral understanding of them.

We like to unfurl words, finding their original or root meaning. Looking into the ancient meaning of words also acts as a measuring tool for authenticity to us. The words that make and describe Sterrekopje have been carefully chosen as they soulfully relay who we are and what we share.

Let us take you on a little linguistic journey of Sterrekopje:

Sterrekopje, the Healing Farm is a biodiverse farm and a reciprocal hospitality concept guided by ancestral wisdom. At Sterrekopje Farm, our family and guests come together to connect, interact, and commune in love and respect, sharing rituals and rhythms in a slow paced, conscious and celebratory way.  Sterrekopje shares her regenerative way of life with her guests. It is a simple, abundant, and above all playful journey rooted in nature.

Healing – Healing comes from the old English word “hale” which means “whole”. Heal means to make “sound or whole”. Healing to us is about remembering and reconnecting or returning to our state of wholeness, our natural state. Sterrekopje is not here to fix people. Through our offered Rituals and Rhythms, Sterrekopje gently supports her guests in their journey of returning to and reconnecting with their wholeness.

Biodiverse – Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on earth, encompassing the different species, their genes and the ecosystems they inhabit. This diversity is essential for a healthy and balanced ecosystem and planet, allowing the growth of resources such as food, medicine and supporting overall well-being. Moving from a mono farm to a regenerative farm over the past 5 years has brought back biodiversity to this land, restoring vibrancy from deep within the soil to high in the sky – returning a wide diversity of insects, birds, owls and other winged and unwinged species.

Reciprocal hospitality – Xenia is the ancient Greek concept of hospitality. Xenia can translate as ‘guest-friendship’ or ‘ritualised friendship’. It is an institutionalised relationship rooted in generosity, gift exchange, and reciprocity. In ancient Greece, hospitality towards foreigners and guests was understood as a moral obligation. The rituals of hospitality created and expressed a reciprocal relationship between guest and host. The hosts had to be hospitable to guests and provide them with a bath, food, drink, gifts, and safe escort to their next destination. The guests were expected to be courteous to their hosts, and provide stories and news from the outside world. Most importantly, guests were expected to reciprocate if their hosts ever called upon them in their homes.

“The ancient concept of hospitality is woven into our vision of living and being.”

Ancestral wisdom – this refers to the timeless knowledge and ways of being that human beings have accumulated over generations, and which have been passed down through word, books, rituals and collective practices. Within this knowledge and these ways of being, nature is at the root, as is the belief in the interconnectedness between all living species. Sterrekopje applies ancestral knowledge and feminine wisdom into her practices, offerings and overall way of life.

Connect – Sterrekopje is a place of connection and meaningful interaction – with ourselves, nature and community. To us, everything is connected and everything is about relationships. Being truly connected to nature – and feeling our interconnectedness with all living beings – allows us to reconnect with ourselves, and one another. The impact of feeling connected at this level is so powerful, and to us, exactly what humans need as well as what our earth needs. Connections and relations need to be nourished and nurtured. At Sterrekopje, we aim to nourish the connection between humans and nature, taking our guests on a stirring soil to soul journey.

Rituals – Simply, a ritual is a way of doing something in the same way every time you do it. But it is much more than just a habit; there is a deeper intention and a sacredness to it. Ritual turns something into ceremony. Rituals make the mundane magical. Rituals bring us greater reverence for ourselves, our bodies, and our well-being. Sterrekopje works with ancient rituals such as our grounding welcome ceremony, ritual baths, cacao ceremonies and full moon rituals. By sharing our daily rituals and rhythms, we hope to inspire our guests in gentle and playful ways to bring rituals into their lives back home.

Regenerative – vs sustainability. Sustainability literally means trying to sustain, or preserve, what is. To us, that is not what the world and humans need. We want to grow, evolve, regenerate. Regeneration is about leaving something better and more beautiful than when you found it. It means to adapt and evolve to life-affirming futures. A timeless journey of becoming more in harmony with life, more attuned to nature’s ways.

“Regeneration, to us, is a way of life, not just a way of farming. Every act should be regenerative, life-affirming. That is our objective at the farm.”

Way of life – Sterrekopje is not solely a hotel or hospitality concept – Sterrekopje is a way of life. A life that is simple, abundant, rooted in nature and above all playful. Life is beautiful and is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated. We believe that we can have a joyful and abundant life that is not detrimental to our health, that of the earth or others when we are fully alive in and connected to our bodies. It is a way of life that we wish for everyone and for the world, and one that we love to share with our guests.

Journey – Sterrekopje does not just offer a stay or an experience. Sterrekopje takes her guests on a gentle and playful journey of becoming or returning/reconnecting to their and life’s essence. To us, life is a journey, a journey of unfolding, of healing, of returning to wholeness. Just being here for some time allows a natural unfolding or becoming – we actually don’t do too much. We hold space as our guests traverse their own journey through our offered rituals and rhythms of rest and play.
